Internet Marketing Mistakes - Why Your Website Isn't Ranking in Google.

1) There's Nothing Useful On It

The #1 reason websites don't rank well is because of a lack of useful content. Search engines can tell when a piece of content is valuable because people link to it and post it on various social media websites.

If that's not happening with your website, Google will only send you the most relevant traffic, and that usually doesn't add up to much. You'll never take down a high traffic keyword unless you create useful articles, tools, quizzes, games, or other things people will find useful.

2) Your Content is Stale

Pretend you are Google for a moment. A person in a small city types "hot tubs ". There are two primary competitors in this city. One updates their website regularly, and the other built their website six months ago and hasn't touched it. Which site would you send the searcher to?

Google is placing a lot of emphasis right now on fresh new content. They understand that a website which contains six month old information may be very out of date. If you practice a build it and forget it strategy, this might be hurting your traffic.

3) You Haven't Researched Your Keywords

Many website owners forget to research what people are actually typing into Google, and the competition for those phrases.

Google offers a free keyword suggestion tool: ( http://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox ).

A small reordering of the words in your article titles based on the information found in this tool can really increase your traffic. And always remember to start your article title with the exact keyword phrase you want to come up for.

4) Other Companies Invest More Money/Time to Rank for the Keyword

The most likely reason other websites are beating you in the search engine results is that they are working harder at getting there than you are.

I can't count how many firms have asked me whether I could get them on page one for a highly competitive keyword. However, when I ask them what their budget is they say something like $500, while the people on page one spend closer to $5,000 each month, and have a huge head start on them.

Ranking for a highly competitive keyword takes time or money. You either need to create more content, convince more people to link to you, or preferably both. If you do this consistently, Google will start showing your website a lot of love.
